Cutting System Components

plasmacam

A functional PlasmaCAM cutting system consists of the following basic components:

  1. Personal Computer (w/ optional accessories)
  2. Hand Plasma Torch
  3. PlasmaCAM Cutting Table:
  4. a)  Electronic Control Box

    b)  Table Frame w/ Moving Torch Carrier

  5. PlasmaCAM Controlling Software

Personal Computer

You will need a Pentium 166 MHz or faster personal computer with a standard bidirectional parallel port. If you shop around, you can buy a good computer system with scanner for under $1000. If you are planning to connect a printer and/or scanner to the computer's parallel port, have an extra parallel port installed (they cost as little as $20). You must use an IEEE 1284 compliant 6-foot parallel port cable to connect to the cutting table.

We suggest that you use a Logitec 3-button mouse with your computer. Make sure that Windows 95 is installed on the computer (PlasmaCAM upgrades will eventually be available for Windows 2000 and beyond). PlasmaCAM cannot guarantee that any computer will work with the cutting table.

Hand Plasma Torch

The PlasmaCAM cutting table has been designed to accept almost any plasma hand torch. The torch is fairly easy to remove and replace, in case you need to use it for other types of cutting. As of this time, we are not aware of any plasma hand torch that will not work with the table. However, PlasmaCAM cannot guarantee that any plasma torch will work with the system.

To put your torch under the control of the machine, you must wire its switch to an automotive relay on the machine. The machine comes with this wire and instructions on how to wire a typical hand torch.

Keep in mind that not all plasma torches are the same. Higher amperage torches are more expensive but can cut thicker material. Torches made by different manufacturers may produce the same current but can still cut very differently. The following list shows some important plasma torch characteristics to consider when choosing a torch for your PlasmaCAM cutting table:

With all plasma hand torches, a tradeoff exists between how fine of detail you can cut and how heavy of material you can cut with minimally beveled edges. Since the PlasmaCAM cutting table has been designed more for light cutting of fine detail, we recommend that you use a low cost, low power plasma torch with a small kerf width.

You will also want to use a plasma torch that is well grounded and that does not produce a lot of high voltage EMI (electromagnetic interference) when initiating an arc. If severe enough, EMI can cause the computer or control box to temporarily malfunction.

Although other plasma torches are under investigation, our tests have shown that the Thermal Dynamics PakMaster 38XL is a reasonably priced plasma torch capable of cutting fine detail in thin material. We have also found that the Hypertherm PowerMax 850 does a good job of lower-detail cutting of thick material.

Service / Parts Replacement

With the exception of the electronic control box, the PlasmaCAM cutting table is composed of very simple mechanical and electrical parts that can be easily repaired or replaced by anyone with mechanical skills.

Replacement parts are available at reasonable prices. For example, to replace the entire grate of the machine currently costs only $495. (The grate supports the sheet during cutting and is made up of sixteen 4½ foot by 4 inch intricately laser-cut grate slats.)

The PlasmaCAM instruction manual not only shows you how to replace parts and fix problems, but also how to take care of your machine and avoid repairs.

Electronic Control Box

The electronic control box is the most complex part of the machine. It connects to motors and switches on the machine through simple wiring, and to the computer by a parallel port cable. The control box is easy to remove, and can be repaired or replaced inexpensively through PlasmaCAM.

Furthermore, for up to one year from the date of purchase by the original purchaser, PlasmaCAM will at is option either replace or repair a control box, in the unlikely event that it becomes defective, at PlasmaCAM's expense upon delivery to our service department. Defective control boxes must be returned to PlasmaCAM freight prepaid.

PlasmaCAM will not be obligated to repair or replace any control box which in PlasmaCAM's opinion has been subjected to misuse, alteration, or abnormal conditions and handling. PlasmaCAM will not be held liable for any damages including but not limited to any person or persons or any delay suffered in connection with the use of the equipment.

Software Specifications

Shipping/Assembly

Each PlasmaCAM machine is fully assembled and tested, then partially disassembled and shipped by UPS in 5 boxes—weighing about 70 lbs each. Shipping cost depends upon method of shipment and location.

Among other things, the Instruction Manual illustrates how to quickly assemble the machine when you receive it.

Instruction Manual/Technical Support

The best source of technical information is the PlasmaCAM Instruction Manual. The Instruction Manual contains detailed instructions and illustrations on how to assemble and install the machine, maintain the machine, fix mechanical problems, and use the software. The manual includes several example projects you can work on to learn how to use the machine.

In addition to the Instruction Manual, one hour of free, high quality telephone technical support is included in the price of each machine. Additional technical support can be purchased as needed at the standard rate, currently $1 per minute.
