Plasma Torch Specs

To help you select the best plasma torch, we have researched all the common models. The table shown below lists only the models that are recommended for use with the PlasmaCAM cutting system. Next to each model is listed the important information needed to choose.

Note: the information listed is correct to the best of our knowledge. However, obtaining such information in an objective form is often difficult. Some figures were estimated based on feedback from our customers as well as the manufacturers' specs.

Important Notes:

  • Thickness figures shown are based on maximum cutting through steel. Though each torch can cut this and maybe even heavier material, productivity and edge quality will suffer unless extra margin is built in. For best results, we recommend using a torch whose listed capacity is higher than the maximum thickness that you plan to cut often.
  • Main Orifice specifies the inside diameter of the nozzle (in inches) through which plasma passes, based on the standard configuration of the torch. The width of the kerf made during cutting is typically about 50% larger than the orifice diameter. Larger orifices are better for making straight cuts through thick material.
  • Alt. Orifice shows the inside diameter of an alternate (smaller) nozzle that can be purchased and used in the torch. This is especially useful if you want to cut both thick and thin material. With a small orifice you can make fine, detailed cuts in thin material. Note that if you use a smaller nozzle, the amps output of the torch must be reduced so as to not exceed the rating of the nozzle.
  • Drag Shield capability can extend consumable life.
  • Cons. Life is a very rough estimate of consumable life, based not on manufacturer ratings but on our own testing and on reports from our customers. Note that high consumable life is not as important if you plan to cut mostly thin material.
  • Cons. Cost is a rough estimate of the average cost to replace consumables, assuming that you buy them from the manufacturer.
  • List price of "Disc." means that the model is discontinued.

If you're thinking about buying a plasma torch that doesn't appear in the above table (or if you have an old one), it may not be suitable for use with the PlasmaCAM cutting system. We believe that other plasma torch models not shown are based on outdated "high frequency/high voltage" (also called "capacitive") technology, which causes severe electromagnetic and radio interference. (See the previous page for more information on the problems caused by these devices.)
